About Proud Past - Inspired Future

Proud Past - Inspired Future is a program that provides a platform for African American students (Sophomores and Juniors) attending Webster Groves High School to create expressions that reflect both an appreciation for their history and aspirations for their future.  An “expression” may be an essay, photo exhibit, painting, sculpture, song, short film or other form.

All entries will be evaluated, and two participating students will be awarded the grand prize – a weekend trip to Washington D.C.  The students, each accompanied by a guardian, will join Julie Burchett and Dana Miller of WGHS for a weekend that will feature a tour of the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, visits to other points of interest and meetings with African Americans who will provide personalized insights and inspiration to guide further studies and career pursuits.  Cash prizes will be awarded to two runners up ($200) and two second runners up ($100).  Winners will be announced January 2019.

I am happy to be part of the team bringing the PPIF opportunity to WGHS. As I reflect on working in the community where I grew up, an important thread is to remember and value the people who came before usand understand how that foundation hasmolded us into who we are. I am continually striving to help students push themselves to new limits, to think critically, and to explore what they have to offer the world. PPIF provides an opportunity for African American students to reflect on what led them the now and will propel them into the future.
